Mardi Gras Indians "Call to the Streets"

One of New Orleans most culturally rich icons are the Mardi Gras Indians.  The tradition has roots in African culture, but began in the New World when slaves escaped their bonds and were befriended by native American Indians.  As a way to honor their friendship between the Indians, these former slaves would mask in feathers and headdresses.  After the abolishment of slavery, the former slaves began their own “tribes” in their New Orleans neighborhoods and they would “mask” on Mardi Gras Day.  These men and women still work all year to create handcrafted and handsewn "suits" with feathers and hand-beaded scenes that honor their culture and the Indians.  The tribes are accompanied by drummers and singers that chant a call and response as they moved through the streets.  The stage performance highlights the beauty and energy of these traditional tribes.   This show includes the introduction of each of the colorfully costumed Indians which are the Spy Boy, Flag Boy, Wild Man, Big Chief and Big Queen,  (Rolls Varies per Tribe)
